Our group, which has been meeting weekly for over a dozen years, does both critiques and writing from prompts. The writing together is essential, I think, because it builds trust among the members. When we write from prompts, we all start in the same place and give up any squeamishness over showing our work before it's perfect. We also get an inspirational jump start by witnessing the creative impulse at its very beginning. Members have published poetry, creataive non-fiction and short stories that had their origin in a writers group prompt. Out of our years together, we co-authored a book on writers groups, "Coffee and Ink: How a Writers Group Can Nourish Your Creativity."

Exposure to criticism from a writer's group is vital for a writer wanting to be published and circulated.
